Deepan closer to title, Tania and Prathiba share lead

Deepan Chakravarthy of India inched closer to the title with a draw against Indian Under 14 Champion G Rohit, in the tenth and penultimate round, here today. In the Girls section, Tania Sachdev and Y Prathiba (both India) shared the lead with 8.0 points.

M K Athula Russell carried the Srilankan medal hopes in the Boys section with 6.0 points, and is scheduled to meet Deepan Chakravarhy of India in the top board in the last round. Athula defeated fellow Sri Lankan Dulan Edhirisinghe in a well fought that lasted full time. Four Sri Lankan girls are vying for the honors with 5.0 points apiece viz., Chandima, Chathuri, Dhanushi, Sajani and Dulani respectively.

The US Dollar 5000 mega chess event, strongest tournament to be conducted in Sri Lankan soil, concludes tomorrow at Club Palm Bay, Marawila. Other than the seizable prize money at stake, the slots for the ensuing World Junior Championships would be picked up on the morrow. India is scheduled to host the World event later this year.
